how does hill start assist work

(1) I posted about the Hill Hold issue on mechanics.stackexchange.com. Today a new answer was posted that describes a solution: ABS Control Module, Byte 25. Change the first 2 (right most bits to 0's) of byte 25. Leave the other bits as is. Hill hold assist will be disabled. I have tested it on 2019 Jetta S 6MT, and works.
Honda added hill start assist to the compact CR-V crossover for the 2012 model year. By 2017, owners began reporting problems with the system in models up until 2021. Hill start assist works by holding the brake for a few seconds once the driver removes his foot from the accelerator. The system only engages when parked at an incline.

Hillstart assist control does not operate effectively when. Do not overly rely on hill-start assist control. Hill-start assist control may not operate effectively on steep inclines and roads covered with ice. Unlike the parking brake, hill-start assist control is not intended to hold the vehicle stationary for an extended period of time.
The only thing though is that in the bottom right of my dash seems to be a Hill Start Assist icon. It is an icon with a car going up a hill. I scrolled through the manual, youtube, and did some google and came up with the Hill Start Assist system is supposed to hold the brake for you for a couple seconds on a hill and let you start just like

What I mean by this is that if you need help to do a hill start or to do a downshift, why are you driving a car in the first place. I don't know how it happened, but I realised that my brake pads seemed to be binding when stationary on a slope today - suddenly I realised it must be this marvelous new feature and was instantly underwhelmed.
These two features are starting to become more commonplace in new Toyotas these days. If you're unfamiliar with the acronyms let me explain. HAC, or Hill-Start Assist Control, is a mechanical assist built into the car to allow you to perform a hill-start easier. DAC, Downhill Assist Control, is another system for allowing you to go downhill safer.

Based on that I would say it applied to the HDs. Can't say on how it works in the Rams though as they didn't have it in 08. Duane.

the hill-start effect and the reductions in the parking brake release delay, friction work and starting jerk. Finally, we further validate the effective implementation of the hill-start assist with the proposed controller on 8.2 %, 13 % and 20 % slopes in the vehicle experiment.

Sometimes when I come to a stop on a hill e.g. At a traffic light, I can take my foot of the brake and the car does not roll back. Is this the hill start assist? How does it work and does it cause any damage if used too much? Thanks. Paul
